Farm Manager – Organic Garlic Farm and Small Orchard
Term: July – October (or until all garlic is dealt with and farm put to bed for winter)
Hours: Approximately 30–45 hours per week
Wage: $23-$28/hr depending on experience
Job Duties
Tasks include but are not limited to:
- Assist in planning and executing the monthly, weekly, and daily operational targets and fieldwork plan for the farm
- Manage all aspects of organic garlic and small orchard operations, including planting, maintenance, harvesting, and post-harvest handling
- Oversee irrigation systems, ensuring proper scheduling, maintenance, and efficient water use
- Operate and maintain farm equipment, including tractors and implements used for soil preparation, planting beds, cultivation, and harvesting
- Report to owner and management team as needed
- Act as liaison between management and the farm staff for the timely execution of projects
- Maintain and renew organic certification and associated compliance documentation
- Budget and maintain accurate financial records; assist with bookkeeping as required
- Recruit, train, and manage laborers and seasonal workers as needed
- Identify and engage potential garlic buyers; maintain good communication and relationships with all buyers
- Update website and Shopify inventory; process and ship online orders
- Manage social media accounts and advertising related to garlic and orchard products
- Lead daily activities, ensuring efficient operations and smooth transitions between tasks
- Provide training and communication to crew on techniques, pace expectations, quality standards, and protocols
- Maintain required recordkeeping per organic standards (planting, harvesting, fertilizing, pest management, food safety)
- Keep facilities, equipment, and tools clean, organized, and in working order
- Participate directly in production tasks such as planting, weeding, roguing, harvesting, and processing
- Perform other farm duties as required
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience managing an organic garlic farm and/or small orchard
- Working knowledge of irrigation systems and water management
- Tractor operation skills and experience with bed preparation, soil management, and equipment maintenance
- Good computer skills, including proficiency with spreadsheets
- Knowledge of organic farming practices and certification requirements
- Experience with Shopify (asset)
- Experience with bookkeeping, especially QuickBooks (asset)
- Strong numeracy and attention to financial detail
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to lead and motivate others
- Physically fit; able to bend for long periods and lift up to 20 kg
- Strong work ethic and positive attitude through long days of physical, repetitive work in all weather conditions
- Able to take direction, learn quickly, ask for clarification when needed, and respond well to constructive feedback
- Ability to work well both independently and within a team
- Initiative, attention to detail, and pride in work quality
- Flexibility to adapt to shifting priorities and extended hours when required
